What I feel like
ptsd is fake
ptsd is bullshit
ptsd is not real
PTSD IS NOT REAL
This has a greater ability than anything to make me mad.
Oh, so I guess that guy who came home from Iraq who still relives his time on the battle field every time he hears a loud bang or pop is just faking it?
or the kid who’s been in and out of hospitals since they were 5 and has nightmares about all the treatment they went under is just sensitive?
Or the mom who lost their child in a car accident that was their fault and now cant even drive without having a flashback should just get over it?
or the boy who was a victim of hate crimes because he’s transgender and still looks over his shoulder while he walks down the street just needs to get a thicker skin?
or the girl who was raped when coming home from a party at a friends house was asking for it and now needs to deal with the consequences of her choice by reliving it every time she goes to sleep?
I’m so not sorry to tell you that these are just a few of the many examples of PTSD that are seen everyday
If you know somebody who is suffering from PTSD or is showing symptoms, DO NOT brush them off or generalize them.
people who have suffered a traumatic event and show the following symptoms may have PTSD. These symptoms include but are not limited to:
being easily startled
constant hypervigilence
sometimes feeling like one is reliving their trauma either through flashbacks or night terrors
feeling intense distress when having something remind them of the event
feeling helpless, trapped, or paralyzed
feeling crippled by anxiety or fear of being in that traumatic incident again or seeing it happen to somebody close to them
avoiding thoughts, feelings, or conversations that remind one of the traumatic event
trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep
DEPRESSION (these two tend to come hand in hand or people who suffered a severe trauma)
You know, even though I’m a proud American citizen, there is sometimes a part of me that resents the veterans with PTSD. now before you flood my inbox with anon hate, hear me out:
When you talk about PTSD (and you’re not an ignorant fuck who thinks that PTSD is bullshit) the natural first example that you think of is returning combat veterans. And that can make the rest of us, like the people who were raped or sick or witnessed or caused a death to feel like :
hey, how come nobody thinks of us? where’s our foundation? where’s the organization that helps us recover and adjust to normal life? how come nobody cares about us just because we didn’t “earn” our trauma by serving our country?
But we as a community need to remember that veterans are the poster child for PTSD and we can learn so much from them. now of course, this is in no way trying to say that PTSD vets are better than the rest of us or think that they are, but they have spread the word. They have helped the general public start to dispel the stigma surrounding all of us
some of the best support ive ever gotten are from combat veterans from Iraq, Afghanistan, and even Vietnam.
PLEASE, IN THESE ONGOING BATTLES THAT ALL PTSD SUFFERERS DEAL WITH ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS, WE ALL NEED TO BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER
PTSD IS VERY REAL
DONT EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU DIFFERENT

IF YOU ARE HAVING AN EMERGENCY, DIAL 1-800-273-8255 AND PRESS 1 FOR VETERANS
IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE AN IMMEDIATE DANGER TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS, CALL 9-1-1 OR YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY SERVICE
I PROMISE THAT YOU’RE NOT ALONE
YOU WILL MAKE IT THROUGH THIS AND COME OUT ON THE OTHER SIDE
IT TAKES THE COURAGE OF A SURVIVOR TO ASK FOR HELP

I love all of my fellow fighters and I long for the day when we will no longer have to  hide in fear
when we will be offered treatment that will be covered by all insurance plans
And I hope for the day when we shall all finally be free
